Overview
Atman (Essence) is an ongoing photographic series by Diego Dominici, begun in 2017, that explores themes of identity, communication, and emotional distance.

Using physical filters—such as glass, panels, and various plastic materials—Dominici creates layered visual surfaces that distort and reshape the human form. These translucent barriers act as both skin and screen, obscuring and revealing in equal measure.

In Atman, the fabric becomes a metaphorical frontier where the individual’s essence is both concealed and expressed. Light and shadow interact with these materials to produce new, involuntary forms—shifting the focus from subject to sensation. The resulting images challenge fixed meanings, instead inviting viewers to reflect on isolation, vulnerability, and the human desire for connection and acceptance.

Biography

Born in 1980, Diego Dominici is an Italian photographer based in Turin. He began his career in 2008, working in event and commercial photography before shifting his focus to more conceptual and artistic work. His practice explores the complexities of the human psyche, using photography as a tool to examine emotional and psychological undercurrents.

Dominici’s images often navigate themes of obsession, isolation, and vulnerability, using aesthetics not as decoration, but as a means of psychological inquiry. His photographs resist surface interpretation, offering layered narratives that invite viewers to engage with the unseen aspects of human experience. Whether visually unsettling or quietly intimate, his work challenges perception and encourages deeper reflection.
