Zach, an incredibly cooperative 10-year-old chimp, was photographed while on assignment for TIME magazine's story about discovering the oldest common ancestor of humans and chimps. I shot several rolls of studio portraits on a Hasselblad camera with 120mm film. I was drawn to this frame because he expressed dignity, serenity, and a confident smile. Chimpanzees and humans share 99.8% of their DNA.
