I photographed this collection of hominid skulls while on assignment for Time magazine on 4x5 film. They represent the evolutionary path to modern man, including branches of evolution that came to dead ends. If you believe in science, they are the real deal. In the center, Lucy is the hominid who lived 3.2 million years ago and is considered a pivotal discovery in understanding human evolution. On November 24, 1974, paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson discovered Lucy's remains in Ethiopia's Afar Rift Valley. The discovery team named her after the Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
